IPL 3 Opening Match in Mumbai

The Indian Premier League's opening match was on Friday shifted from Hyderabad to Mumbai.

Decision was taken owing to the political unrest in Andhra Pradesh over the Telangana issue.

"It remains a Deccan Chargers vs Kolkata Knight Riders match but instead of Hyderabadb, it would be held in Mumbai. The opening game, the opening ceremony and the opening gala dinner (on March 11) are very important for us. People from all over the world are coming and we are going to make sure that everything is in order. We don't want to take any chances," Modi said.

"There are no changes to other matches, everything looks fine. We have worked it out with franchises and the teams and decided that match would be held in Mumbai," he added.

Pakistan Plans Quitting IPL - Angoor Khate Hain?

Hurt Pakistani cricketers have decided to "avoid" the Indian Premier League until Indo-Pak diplomatic ties don't normalise, sources in the team revealed on Thursday.

The players, who didn't find a buyer in the third IPL auction on Tuesday, held a meeting in Brisbane, where the team will play an ODI series against Australia. They decided it was best to ignore the event at least for the time being.

"The players unanimously decided to avoid playing in the IPL in future and until at least relations between the two countries normalised," one source said.

Title holder Deccan Chargers will take on Kolkata Knight Riders at Hyderabad in the opening match of the 60-match IPL season 3 to be played from March 12 to April 25, 2010. This was announced by Lalit Modi, Chairman of the IPL Governing Council here on Monday.

The additional match will be a play–off for the third and fourth position between the losing semifinalists.

It was also announced that Mumbai Indians will play a few matches at Nagpur, Deccan Chargers at Visakhapatnam, Kings XI Punjab at Dharamsala and Rajasthan Royals at Ahmedabad.

It’s been proposed that players should not be paid lower than Rs. 8 lakh and in excess of Rs. 20 lakh. It’s up to the BCCI to draft the guidelines and identify players in the two categories.

“If a franchise had signed in a player from the former ICL group, it will be treated as null and void,” said Modi.

Revealing that the expenses for season II held in South Africa were much higher, Mr. Modi said the modalities of making up the shortfall of the eight franchises will be addressed at a meeting next week with the team owners.

Change in the Rules

A significant change has also been made to the strategic time out (seven and half minutes after the first 10 overs in South Africa) for the season III next year. The fielding captain will have the option to take a two and half minute STO between the 6th and 10th overs and the batsman will have the option to take a two and half minute STO between the 11th and 16th overs.

No Icon Players in IPL Season 3

The ‘icon status’ of India’s most cherished cricketers will soon come to an end. From 2010 onwards, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh, who enjoyed this special status in the inaugural two seasons, will be like any other player in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“In the original plan itself, ‘icon status’ was only for two years. That time IPL was a new concept and we wanted to build a strong base for teams. But it is not mandatory to keep these players after the next season,” IPL commissioner Lalit Modi said here on Tuesday.

“They can be traded or other teams can bid for them in the fresh auctions after the 2010 season. They will not be icon players anymore,” he added.

Abolishing the ‘icons’ tag would mean that these players no more stand to earn 15% more than the highest-earning player from his franchise. The fees will be at the discretion of the franchise. This was among the many decisions taken during the IPL governing council meeting held in Mumbai on Tuesday.

It also decided to add four new venues to the IPL tournament, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala and Vishakapatnam, which will act as home venues for Mumbai Indians, Team Jaipur, Kings XI and Team Hyderabad respectively. The franchisees can decide the number of matches at these venues. IPL season III will be played from March 12-April 25, for which the schedule has already been charted out.

The opening match will be between Team Hyderabad and Knight Riders in Hyderabad while the total number of matches has been increased from 59 to 60, to include a third place play-off after the two semifinals. “The schedule has been prepared eight months in advance to help franchisees and sponsors get ready in time for the event,” Modi said.

The IPL has also brought a change in strategy (time-out) breaks that were introduced in 2009. Instead of a seven-and-half minute break per innings (which equals to 15 minutes per game), there will now be two two-and-half minute breaks per innings (equaling to 10 minutes per game).

The first break will be called by the bowling captain between the sixth and the tenth over while second by the batsman at the crease between the 11th and 15th over.

The IPL has also decided to tweak the NOC rule a bit to deal with players not signing their board contracts in time and missing out on FTP commitments.
